Dear Mother,
I am sorry for not writing you for so long. I have not had very much time. We march from place to place and we do not get much rest. When we camp, we have to clean our clothes ourselves. We also clean our guns when we camp. It takes a lot of time. I miss you and father so much. I wish I had more time to write. I wish could see you.
I do not understand why we are fighting ourselves. We are all Americans and we are killing each other. The recent battle in Shiloh, Tennessee was horrendous. Twenty-three thousand gentleman were injured or passed on. Our general, Robert E. Lee, is extremely courageous. I do not believe General Ulysses S. Grant, the general for the Union, is quite as strong in the heart as General Lee. The Battle of Shiloh lasted from the morning of April 6, 1862 to mid-day of April 7, 1862. We fight so brutally. Each side lines up facing the other and walks forward shooting the soldiers on the other side. Then, when we get close enough, we stop shooting and start stabbing with our bayonets. It is hard to believe we are fighting this way.
We lost this battle. I know a few men that had their arms amputated. They said it was horrible, the pain overwhelming. "Doctors" use saws to cut off the soldier's body part and then, take a burning hot pan and press that against the bleeding stump to singe the blood vessels so the bleeding stops. -Mitch} During the battle, wounded soilders were picked up, put on stretchers and carried to a medical tent. This is where they would amputate the body part that had been injured. I heard one man pointed a gun at the "doctor" and said, "The man who touches me, is the man who dies." Surprisingly, he actually lived through his wound. By the way, he not kill the doctor. -Ben}
I wish I had never volunteered to fight in this war. Every night I am scared that the Union is going to surprise attack our camp. The walking is extremely hard. My feet and legs hurt. My boots are wearing down. The battles are the worst. The only sound I hear during the battles are screams and the bangs of guns and canons firing. -Mitch} This, for some reason, reminds me of when you, father and I would shoot at the old stump in the back of the house and pretend we were fighting the Union in a Civil War. The only difference is that now it is real. -Ben}
You remember our neighbor, James Sitton, I hope. Sadly, he was killed in the battle. The Confederacy put him in the front line and he was one of the first to die. I hope that this war ends very soon. Mother, if only I could be at home with you and father. -Mitch}
