Intro.

Nick

Good morning U.S.A. I am your host Nick Boden, an, your listening to WXMT Smooth the radio station for all that Jazz. For our show we will be talking about what happened this past decade in the 1920's. There will be a political report, a sports and entertainment story, and lots of national news. Our trivia question of the day is when did the peanut butter and jelly sandwich become famous if you know the anwser then send a letter to 3765 Harlin Dr if you get this question right you will be awarded with a free douzen egg box of Denessen's fresh eggs. Thanks for listening to me and dont forget stay cooooolll! Now here is some music to sooooth your souls.

Political Report

Reid

Well its once again time for the Political Report. The 1920s were quite a hotbead of activity. Warren G. Harding thats quite a stain in history. He was a corrupt president known fr om the Teapot Dome Scandal where he use millions of taxpayer dollars to buy oil for personal gain. Women all over the U.S. either quit or were layed off from there jobs because of the returning soldieres from the war. Factories also shut down because they were no longer needed for war weapons. As everyone was being layed off the price of living also went up. People began protesting and walking off there jobs. The worst part was that the police walked off and in Massachussetes looters and criminals had a field day. Governer Calvin Coolidge called in the military to settle things. Also another memorable moment that still stands is the banning of alchoholic drinks. This resulted in the birth of shine runners and gangsters who faithfully delivered alchohol to speakeasies everywhere. Al "Scarface" Capone is one off the most famous of the gangstrs. He even partisipated in the tragic Saint Valentines day massacre. He and his gang sent booze here through every way available. He used boats, planes, and he even delivered the good stuff by hand if he had to. It was almost a tragedy when he was caught and sent to Alcatraz prison.

Sports and Entertainment

Jonathan

Sports have become very popular the past decade. Golf becomes available to the middle-class, Johnny Weissmuller broke the record of swimming 100 meters in under a minute with 58.6 seconds, Ralph Samuelson invents water skiing, but most of all, George Herman " Babe " Ruth shatters the homer record, his best in 1927 with 60 in a season. Babe hit a ton of homers the past ten years we all love to see but one was very special. Some of you may have already heard this story but one day on one of Babe's games before it had even started, Ruth went to see sick 11-year old Johnny Slyvester in the hospital. Ruth gave him an autographed ball and promised to hit a homer just for him. What happens? Babe kept his promise and hit it out of the park. You sometimes have to wonder how anyone could ever hit more homers than he could. After the game Ruth said " A home run is the best medicine." Some people say that it was a coincidence that Johnny got better. I don't see how it matters. It's amazing that someone can just promise to hit a homer and keep it.

We now go to entertainment and jazz. It's just spectacular how jazz got so popular the past decade. Where did it come from? African music. Blacks took advantage of their freedom and started careers singing and dancing. It became known as jazz. Whites and blacks are often in the same band together. Instruments in bands include trumpets, guitars, drums, pianos, saxes, and much more. Talents were recognized. People like Duke Ellington who was a pianist or Ben Pollack who was a drummer are very talented. It's a shame that some people don't like it but jazz will not go anywhere but up. That was jazz, here is some more entertainment. Rin-tin-tin used to be a starving German Shepard during WWI but in 1923 he became the most famous dog to star in movies. How? During WWI, Corporal Lee Duncan adopted two baby German Shepards, one female and one male. Most of you can probably assume that the male was named Rin-Tin-Tin. The female was named Nanette but unfortunately she died before Duncan got back to Los Angeles where he lives. Anyways, in 1922 Duncan took Rin-Tin-Tin to a Shepard Dog Club two-day show. Rin-Tin-Tin amazed everyone by jumping 11 feet 9 inches. Duncan knew his dog had talent and contacted almost every studio in Hollywood. Rin-Tin-Tin eventually became the most famous dog to star in movies as you already know. Wrapping up our report and not going too into detail, the first Miss America Contest was held on September 8, 1921 and the first Miss America was Margaret Gorman.

National News

Michael MacDonald

I'll tell you folks those no good commie pigs have us every way we turn. The Bolsheviks drove Russia out of World War One, and now here come there ideas to America. I am sincerely worried about communist domination of this newly liberated world. Russia should be a huge concern of the American public, after all some of their ideas have already seeped into the minds of our youth and do we really want another civil war?! I am telling you the stock market crash has made people reconsider the safety of economics, many think we should resort to Communism. That is the wrong answer! We already have enough violence with the Mafia and prohibition. If we do indeed resort to communism, we would be making our last mistake. The idea of communism might be an okay one but it never works out. The Czar was murdered with his wife and kids. It is that the type death you want? The idea of everyone sharing? Bah! Maybe until the leader wants more and destroys everything around him for it. We must not fall for this evil plot to destroy the freedom of our country. The United States of America should be sincerely worried about the domination of lesser countries through communism.

Interview

Michael macDonald and William Hennagan

William:we are talking to a former member of the Italian Mafia. So Michael what was it like working in the mob.Michael:well ill tell ya i cant walk home from work without looking over my shoulder. I was starting as a hitman in chicago. i decided to do my job well but not think about it later.Hennagan: So how did you think about Al Capone and the rest of the Mafia? michael: I decided to not worry about the people who were equal to me or below in the army. Even though i was just a little higher than a foot soldier. Through my good work i became a captain. I was ordering people around and was soon a very powerful crime boss in the South side of Chicago with a snap of my fingers a man could die.Hennagan: what was life like on the top?Michael:Well i was what you call a made man i was rich i ahd nice suits and hats and a nice little semi automatic pistol i was on top of my game. But soon the boss got angry and sent a whole platoon to my house. My gaurds put a up a fight and the sound of gunfire woke me up. My nice semi automatic pistol? It was a nice way to fight my way the the madness. now i live in fear and i sleep with one eye open. This decade has been good to me and bad to me put i know ill never forget it.
