 Freedom Rides

By: Tatiana Nettles

I am a student in Nashville, Tennessee. One day I heard about the Freedom Riders going from Washington, D.C. to New Orleans.  The Freedom Riders are a group of black and white, young people who protested segreagation.  There plan was to stop at bus terminals and have the blacks to use the facilities for whites and have the whites use the facilities for the blacks.  All seem to go well until they hit Alabama.  In Birminham an angry mob of white people destroyd the Freedom Riders bus and there was a bomb and the bus blew up and it was on fire.

In Nashville, my friends and I decided to go join the Freedom Riders in Birmingham.  We decided to ride with the Freedom Riders to Montgomery, Alabama.  All of us drove to Montgomery to the bus terminal where we were met up with an angry mob.  We were beaten and attacked half to death by these people of the angry mob.  While we were attacked, we some how managed to escape the mob to a locol church.  While we were in this church we were not able to go anywhere becuase of the angry mob.  But it was ausome to be in the church.  We were in the church for a while and then suddenly... all of the mob got quiet and everyone started to cheer and clap as loud as they posibly could.  All of the people were clapping and cheering becuase Martin Luther King Jr. came and started to talk about how the Freedom Riders should keep on going strong and how the Civil Rights Movement is a great way to end segregation.  You think it is over, but NO!!

After this pit stop in Montgomery, we decided to travel to Jackson,Mississippi.  Again we were traveling into a bus terminal and we were introdruced with an angry mob.  We were introduced again with the beating and the horrible pain.  We thought that we were going into safety but we thought wrong becuase we somehow fell into this horrible and very sneeky plan.  This plan was for all the people who were with the Freedom Riders were stuffed into a paddy wagon and were of to jail.  We had to go to court and my attorny was talking about how we should be let out free, but the judge would not listen and he turned his back on us.  The judge was so rude that he through a book at as and told us that we would be in jail for the next 60 days. We thought that the judge was supposed to listen to everyone and be fair but we again thought wrong!!

So this summer we spent most of our time in jail and getting beat up and getting horribly hurt.  Our goal was to try to get from Washington D.C to New Orleans.  But this goal had failed.  We tried and tried but we never actually sucueeded this plan.  So after this, it helped to inforce Robert Kennedy to order the Interstate Commerce Commission to ban segregation.  Also the Freedom Riders helped the Civil Rights Movement by making the world a better place and especially ending the segregation of the restrooms.
